Carl Frey Constein was born in the eastern State Pennsylvania town of Fleetwood City. After college, he enlisted in the military service, became a WWII aviation cadet, receiving his commission as pilot. He was sent to to fly supplies and materiel to China country-region over the Himalayan Hump. For his 96 round-trip flights he was awarded two Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He recalled his year in the China-Burma-India of operations in the memoir Born to Fly the Hump. Later he compiled letters of Hump pilots and other CBI veterans in the book Tales of the Himalayas. The author has a doctorate from Temple University. He has been a teacher, curriculum director, education writer, and school superintendent. He lives outside Berks County State Pennsylvania.
