Chun-Pyo Jhong graduated from Seoul National University Law College (in Seoul, Korea) in 1953 with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence degree and from Southern Methodist University Law School (in Dallas, Texas) in 1957 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. He thereafter pursued graduate studies at Yale Law School (in New Haven, Connecticut) and was awarded a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in 1958 and a Doctor of Science of Jurisprudence (J.S.D.) degree in 1961. Between 1961 and 1968 he worked for Lawyers Cooperative Publishing Company in New York as a legal editor, a training editor, and an assistant managing editor. From 1968 until 1990 he was affiliated with the legal department of Asian Development Bank, an international financial institution located in Manila, Philippines, serving as its Assistant General Counsel from 1971 to 1975, as its Deputy General Counsel from 1975 to 1979, and as its General Counsel from 1979 to 1990. In 1990 he joined Kim & Chang, the largest law firm in Korea specializing in cross-border business activities and transactions, and has been serving as a senior legal advisor for the firm since then. He passed the 1953 annual Korean highest national examinations for the judiciary branch and for the administration branch, each at the top in ranking. He served as an arbitration panel member for the International Center for Settlement of Investment Dispute (ICSID) of the World Bank group between 1992 and 1998. He is the author of several articles on international finance and related matters.
