Teopista Kesande et al. wrote this book after carrying out a study on cleft lip and cleft palate in two Hospitals in Kisoro District (South Western Uganda) and interviewing key informants. It reveals that the period prevalence of oro-facial clefts in Kisoro District is within range seen elsewhere, at least within Africa, and the pattern is in tandem with findings in previous studies. It also gives the views of the medical staff in the two Hospitals and those of the parents/guardians of children with oro-facial clefts in the local communities. The affected children are regarded as outcasts in the local communities and end up with psychosocial problems. Hence, calling for sensitization and counseling of the families and communities. This book also reveals that these oro-facial anomalies are associated with medical complications, therefore it, recommends that the policy makers need to strategically plan for provision of surgical intervention on the affected children.
