In June 1748, eighty Nanticoke Indians grounded their canoes in a wilderness along the Susquehanna River in the area that would later be named Nanticoke. While it was first a farming area, coal was later discovered, and by 1825, the first coal mine was in operation. Nanticoke owes its chief growth to the anthracite industry, which provided employment opportunities for thousands of European immigrants. Through their labor and strong work ethic, they established a superb city in which to live a full life. They also left behind a magnificent history of their times. Chester J. Zaremba, vice president and secretary/treasurer of the Nanticoke Historical Society, became aware that in his hometown of Nanticoke there was no central repository for historical information about the city. He and several others proceeded to establish the Nanticoke Historical Society in 1995. The photographs in Nanticoke all come from the holdings of the Nanticoke Historical Society and represent only a portion of the history that has been preserved.
