Model test blasts in concrete blocks of known strengths are also given to ascertain the effect of decoupled charges on fragmentation. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is also introduced to train different blast design parameters and other important factors. Monitoring of ground vibration, blast-fumes, strata load and roof convergence are also considered for safety of underground workings. A new induced blasting pattern namely Staggered Ring Breakage Method (or SRBM pattern) is prescribed for effective induced caving of overhanging roof.

Dr. C. Sawmliana graduated in Mining Engineering from Bengal Engineering College, Sibpur and did Master of Technology in Rock Mechanics from IT, BHU. He obtained Ph.D. degree from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. He is presently working as a scientist in the Blasting Department of Central Institute of Mining & Fuel Research, Dhanbad.
