Old Bende Division under British Administration, 1921-1960 is an in-depth study of the socio-political and administrative history of Old Bende Division. The Division was the largest cocoa growing area in the former Eastern Region. During this period, a series of political and administrative arrangements were made in an effort to evolve a suitable local government structure. The author established the following: the Division was a conglomerate of people of different cultural disposition and background. The British were helpful in some ways, particularly in settling of endemic local conflicts and in the economic sphere, but were unrealistic, unfortunate and even disastrous in other instances, especially in the political arena. The problem faced by the present local government system in Nigeria was largely inherited from our colonial past and finally. The study established the fact that by the time Britain transferred power to Nigerians on 1st October, 1960. The Division was no longer an expression of geography, but a reality of history. This book is highly recommended for under-graduates and post-graduate students and researchers that are interested in the study of Igbo history.
