After leaving a life of unhappy privilege in India to settle his younger brother's financial crisis in England, Clayton is kidnapped and held in thrall by an insatiable courtesan with tendencies to drink blood. Against his will she turns him into a vampire. Anger, dismay, and remorse shape his life as he tries to cope with his unwanted vampiric nature and the constant need for blood. He travels to America and meets Mary Ellington. They fall deeply in love. It's difficult but he keeps his vampire nature a secret. During his marriage proposal to Mary, on the eve of the Civil War, Clayton is assassinated. Mary believes he died, but since his body has disappeared from the morgue, she is forced to bury an empty casket. Clayton is badly injured and finally recovers but has no memories of Mary. After the war Mary moves west to start a new life as a ranch owner. Clayton resumes his civilian life and his discovery of America but continues to dream of a blood drenched woman holding him and crying his name. He feels a strong need to head west not realizing he and Mary had spoken of living on a ranch many times. He heads for Colorado towards a woman he has never met and a love he doesn't remember.
