When speakers imitate a word from a foreign language and partly adapt it in sound and grammar to their native speech, the process is known as borrowing, and the word is called loanword. A majority of the words used in English, however strange it seems, are of foreign origin. The subject of this work is the analysis of the Italian influence and the penetration of Italian loanwords in English, especially in the sixteenth century. The work is composed in three main chapters referring to the general knowledge about borrowing, to the relationship between the two countries and to the general features of the Italian loanwords in English, and finally it contains a list of words with explanations regarding their meaning and change of meaning. I recommend this work to everyone who is interested in learning languages, especially who wants to know what kind of influence had the Italian culture and language on the English language and lifestyle.
