The non-technical approach of the book, but with an accurate and reasonably complete treatment of the subject, facilitates readers with varied background and interests. Special terms have been kept to a minimum. Those which seem essential for clarity or conciseness are defined where first used. The information on each species follows a uniform arrangement - scientific name, original description, recommended Malay name, diagnosis and habitat. It is hoped that this book will stimulate further studies to uncover new facts about the freshwater fishes of Peninsular Malaysia in particular, and Malaysia and the surrounding region in general.

Zakaria-Ismail, Mohd
MOHD ZAKARIA-ISMAIL was born in Johor, Malaysia. He received his early education at College of Agriculture Malaya in Serdang, now Universiti Putra Serdang. He received his Ph.D. in 1989 from the Colorado State University, Fort Collins, USA. He was a Professor of Biology at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, until his retirement in March 2011.
