In the UK, he studied philosophy, became a British citizen, and made England his home. He soon became a prominent opposition figure in exile. In 2010, Andy was charged in Ethiopia with trumped-up accusations and sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment and death. In 2014, while transiting from Dubai to Asmara, he was abducted by Yemeni intelligence officers at Sana'a International Airport, bribed by the Ethiopian government. Blindfolded and handcuffed, he was transported to Ethiopia, where he was placed in solitary confinement.
