Growing up as a Jewish teenager as the Nazi state pursued him through Croatia, Andrew Duic survived as a result of his own resourcefulness and adaptability, and the good judgement and courage of his parents. His trenchant observations of the Communist post-war reconstruction, his emigration to Canada in the 1960s and his career as a paediatrician make for compelling reading.

Andrew Duic, MD, FRCP(C), was born in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and lived in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After surviving 2 years in the Nazi "Independent State of Croatia," the family fled into the forests of Slavonia and joined Tito's Partisans, where he served 18 months and 10 days, aged 14-16. Demobilised, he finished high school and medical school, and created a normal life as a son, husband, father, and paediatrician, and is an inspiration to his friends and family.
