This paper discusses the poetry of one of the greatest minds in English literature, the metaphysical genius John Donne. Donne`s writing is very complex and rarely renders a single meaning. His poetry elaborates a lot of different subjects, out of which we underline the ones celebrating love or/and death. We speak about the critics' views, both the ones that consider Donne's love poetry to be a result of his metaphysical studies and those that write about Donne`s "true self". We discuss all the different types of love that Donne writes about and all the different ways he challenges death. Furthermore, we elaborate the poems in which Donne joins together love and death, at the end never allowing death to "win". By elaborating Donne`s poems we will try to gain insight of "the writers soul".
