There is a general perception that there are too many accidents near schools. The main objective of this book is to investigate the accident situation near schools in Newcastle and Gateshead. Five years of accident data from 2004 to 2009 in 500 meter radius of each school is used for this study. This data is obtained from TADU database and no data has been obtained from hospital and insurance companies. An aggregated approach of accident analysis is used in this study. GIS techniques along with statistical software are used to carry out the analysis. A more specific objective is to scrutinise the impacts of school safety zone on accidents in Newcastle. The analysis evaluated the frequency of accidents before and after the implementation of safety zone of 64 schools in Newcastle. It was found against the perception of people that there are not too many accidents directly outside the schools.

Muhammad Rehan is a Civil Engineer and works in Highway Design at Newcastle City Council. He is a member of CIHT and has a keen interest in road safety issues.Dr Anil Namdeo is a Chartered Environmentalist and a senior lecturer at Newcastle University. He is also a Fellow of Royal Meteorological Society and member of several professional bodies.
