Legendary educator Adelaide L. Sanford was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 27, 1925. In 1930 Adelaide Hines began school at P.S. 44 on Throop Avenue and later attended Stephen Decatur Junior High School 35, where she was a member of the Drama Club and was Valedictorian of her graduating class. She attended Girls High and is a graduate of Brooklyn College, where she earned her B.Ed. degree in 1947; she received her M.Ed. degree from Wellesley College three years later; and she earned her P.D. Professional Degree from Fordham University in 1967, where she was a Ford Foundation Fellow in Urban Education. Dr. Sanford also served as a visiting practitioner and teaching fellow at the Principals' Center at Harvard University, Graduate School of Education; she served on the board of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone and as a national advisor for multicultural education. Dr. Adelaide L. Sanford's professional career has spanned teaching and leadership from the elementary through college and graduate school levels. She has been a classroom teacher, assistant principal, and principal in the New York City school system as well as a teacher educator at Baruch College in NYC.
