In 1990 Alden Olmsted's life changed forever when he dropped out of college to start his own BMX bicycle company, Homestead Bicycles. After finding a shop in Tennessee to fabricate bikes to his design specs and using all the money he had, he ordered 50 frames, Alden set out to promote his fledgling brand. What began with such promise would soon come crashing down around him. After selling 30 bikes, a request for the remaining 20 would be met with word that the fabricator had gone out of business. Alden Olmsted was born in Glen Ellen, to a single mother and one older brother. A semi-typical small town childhood found Alden embracing BMX bike riding and graphic design as his main adolescent pursuits. Dropping out of college in 1990, Alden took a huge life gamble when he started his own bike company, Homestead Bicycles, at just 19 years old. The short-lived company's story is told in his most recent film 30 Bikes, his previous two films having centered around reconnecting with his absent father, California Naturalist John Olmsted.Ten years after dropping out of college Alden returned to Biola University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Leadership. He has founded two companies, made four films on his own and acted as Cinematographer on the documentaries Convinced (2014) and Unprotected (2018).His illustration has led to a children's book, The Story of Elmer in Yosemite, and his photographs and illustrated cards have sold up and down California in The Getty Museum, Copperfield's Bookstores, and Golden Gate Park Conservancy Visitor Centers.Alden loves old cars, road trips, and old friends.
