Allyn is a young, blundering English teacher from Canada who finds herself amidst cultural turmoil as she struggles to abide by the unique practices and traditions of Korean society. Set in the 'Land of the Morning Calm' at the turn of the Millennium, Allyn begins a journey into turbulent waters, becoming deeply submerged in the Korean way of life. Overwhelmed and distressed from being far from her cultural comfort zone, she is driven to accept all hands that are dealt to her by society and, particularly, by her meddlesome mother-in-law, Omma. The book touches on ample elements of the Korean culture as the author flirts with and tests tradition, but, in the end, culture wins. Morning Calm is a seamless vindication of the 'when in Rome' mind-set. Author Bio: Allyn M. Manuel teaches Business and Academic writing and English as an Additional Language (EAL). She draws upon her experiences living and teaching in South Korea as the inspiration for her novel. She currently lives with her fiancé and their daughter in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
