Reactions were carried out on Schiff bases derived from condensation of 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde or salicylaldehyde with 2-aminophenol and 8-aminoquinoline. The Schiff bases were reacted with Ni(II) and Cu(II) metal ions in presence of diamines as 2,2'-dipyridyl or 1,10-phenathroline or S-donor anion as thiophenolate. The used Schiff bases were N-salicylidene-8-aminoquinoline (HQS), N-2-hydroxynaphthalidene-8-aminoquinoline (HQN), N-2-hydroxynaphthalidene-2-aminophenol (H2PN) and N-salicylidene-2-aminophenol (H2PS). The complexes were found to have the general formulas [M(SB)(N-N)] , [M(SB)(N-N)AcO].XH2O and [M(QN)(SPh)], where M is Cu(II) or Ni(II), SB is the Schiff base and N-N is 2,2-'dipyridyl or 1,10-phenathroline. All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements.
