Human papillomavirus is one of the most important infectious causes of cancer; especially the genitourinary and oro-pharyngeal cancers. Cervical cancer has particular significance being the principal cancer in most developing countries and also the leading cause of mortality from cancer worldwide. While screening and vaccination against HPV offer 100% prevention against cervical cancer and the polyvalent/bivalent vaccines protects mainly against HPV types 16 and 18, there exists evidence that HPV type 16 play smaller roles in cervical cancer in Nigeria than in Europe. This book presents the findings of study aimed at determining the prevalence of HPV types 16 and 18, the associated cervical intraepithelial lesions and the risk factors, and will especially be useful to academics and researchers in medicine, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
