This book describes the challenges that culturally and linguistically diverse exceptional students face with reading in both their native language and in their second language, English. It describes an ABAB single-case research design that was utilized to examine the effects of a reading instructional technique incorporating Explicit Vocabulary Instruction and Teacher Read Aloud to improve the Spanish oral reading performance of students who were culturally and linguistically diverse and exceptional. Results of the study indicated that the intervention was effective and that this instructional technique can be a beneficial and socially valid technique that can be easily applied in classrooms serving culturally and linguistically diverse students with and without disabilities who may be experiencing reading problems.
