Compromise programming approach is useful for determining the best compromise flux formulation when various conflicting performance criteria are considered. This approach is also useful for criteria with different dimensions; it includes a technique of normalising and then aggregating the different conflicting quality criteria. The weld metal responses such as microstructural and mechanical properties in submerged arc welding were optimised. The proposed method eliminates the problem experienced by the traditional welding flux development to give the best balance among several conflicting quality criteria. The welding flux designer can use different weight structures to explore trade-off options before choosing the formulation that best suits his needs. This approach is also useful for identifying complementary and conflicting criteria. Partially complementary criteria can also be identified by using compromise programming.
