Investigations into the chemical and biological activities of plant during the past centuries have yielded compounds for the development of modern synthetic organic chemistry, and the emergence of medicinal chemistry as a major route for the discovery of novel and more effective therapeutic agents. In view of the emerging competitive world, the evaluation of the constituents, pharmacological properties, detailed screening of bioactive substances for chemotherapeutic purposes are urgently warranted. Historically, plants provide a source of inspiration for novel drug compounds, in which they play a major role in the development of new drugs by becoming the basis for the development of new medicine i.e. a natural blueprint for the development of new drugs and a phytomedicine to be used in the treatment of disease. Garcinia kola, from the family of Guttiferae, which is highly valued in Nigeria because of it s edible nut, is a plant that exhibits very potent pharmacological activitiessuch as antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory properties. In view of this properties the antioxidant potential of the leaf was studied.
