Betty is a former newspaper writer and photographer having worked on two North Carolina newspapers; one as associate editor, another as news and feature writer and photographer. She studied journalism, business administration and photography at Sampson Community College, Clinton, N.C. and art, UNC-Wilmington. She is a native of Smithfield, Virginia and makes her home in Clinton. She has three daughters and one grandchild.
