Calving is a key dairy farming event and the goal is to have deliver a live, healthy calf and mother cow. Thus, knowing when a cow is going to calve is very important for a dairy farm in order to provide necessary assistance in case of difficulties during calving and after birth. Losing a cow or calf during calving processing is heart breaking and yet this often preventable. Like human, labour can be sudden, quick, late or unexpected at times making it difficult for the farmers to predict. The pedigree calves in particular are often big and require caesarean section this means both the farmer and vet should be available. High calf loss rates are an international welfare problem though this is often not recognised. These loss rates have increased in recent years. Improvement in calf survival rates is dependent upon re-prioritization of this problem as relative to other animal health and welfare issues and creation of awareness of this prioritization. It is with this in mind that amethod of detecting when the cow is about to calf is hereby proposed.
