Applied Concepts in Communication Studies is an introductory level textbook designed for instructors teaching large, lecture-style courses. While covering all the basic concepts in communication, performance related elements, such as student speeches, are limited. Instead, this text incorporates content not found in traditional introductory communication textbooks, including the Internet, social media, and culture. Each chapter begins with an outline of the learning objectives and concludes with discussion questions a bridge to the next chapter. An extensive set of references is also provided to give students instant access to more in-depth resources on each topic. Adopting instructors will have access to a complete set of Power Point slides. Bruce C. McKinney received his B.A. in psychology from the University of New Hampshire and his M.A. and Ph.D. in speech communication from Pennsylvania State University. He teaches courses in concepts in communication studies, mediation, communication theory, and negotiation at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Dr. McKinney has also taught at James Madison University (Virginia) and Angelo State University (Texas). He taught at UNCW from 1990-1999 and returned to UNCW in 2005. He has also traveled to Vietnam twenty times to teach Vietnamese business managers negotiating skills in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Vung Tau.
