Autorenporträt
Bruce Dunlop Hoffman spent his childhood in a small town in northern Illinois, pondering the day when he would live under a vast glass dome in a city full of jungles and spend his days inventing space ships, time machines, and hitherto unknown snacks, while also exploring the universe with his trusty jet pack/submarine. When he was very young-about four or five years old-his parents took the family from Chicago to California on the Santa Fe Railroad's Super Chief. Although he has no specific memories of the rail journey itself, he does recall his immense enjoyment of the trip. Perhaps something of the experience percolated down into the groundwater of his imagination then and fed what many decades later emerged as "Who's Driving the Train?" This book is his first foray into children's fiction. Much of his career was devoted to making educational materials for schools, including motion pictures and computer-based multimedia, with audiences ranging from early elementary school children to college students. He tried always to serve as a representative for his audience rather than acting as a pedagogue to them. He aims to bring this "audience-centric" philosophy to the creation of children's fiction. What will engage them? How can we encourage them to explore? He currently lives along the Central Coast of California with his very tolerant wife, and has taken over his forgiving daughter's bedroom to use as his studio while she's out conquering the world.
