This study explores young children's perspectives on their first year in primary school with particular emphasis on gender differences. Views of parents and teachers were sought to ascertain the level of support afforded to children during this transition. A qualitative approach was used with a mixed methodology to include semi-structured interviews with adults and focus groups with children. The author concluded that many challenges were evident during this period in children's lives. These challenges were somewhat overcome dependent on the level of support afforded to children by their peers, teachers and adults. Gender differences in both behavior and ability to learn was highlighted throughout this study.
