Eutrophication related problems are highlighted, including their ecological, social and economic impacts, which provides a basis for the formulation of further research needs. Despite legislation moderating the discharge of phosphorus from selected wastewater treatment works since the 1980s, eutrophication of freshwater resources in South Africa is now widespread and more management options need to be implemented. The book is the first to give an overview of eutrophication related research and management in South Africa during the last century, and highlights a few management case studies.

Carin E. van Ginkel, PhD: Botany from North West University, South Africa. She has 22 years experience in the eutrophication field and was the Coordinator of the National Eutrophication Monitoring Programme for the Department of Water Affairs in South Africa for a period of 10 years.
