The Chemistry of Sulphur and analogues in the environment has taken in a new significance in recent years due to its involvement in the formation of atmospheric aerosols and its impact on acid precipitation, human health and in the radiation balance of the atmosphere. The world oceans play a significant role in the transport of Sulphur compounds from marine, coastal and estuarine environments to the atmosphere. A benchmark study of Sulphur compounds in the marine environment of Cochin was carried out giving emphasis to their role in the redox status of estuarine sediments. An attempt to decrease the sulphur content of the marine sediments was done using phytoremediation technique.
