The realism of the novel comes from the author's own experiences. Born in Ireland and educated at Oxford, Charles Stanley Archer worked in China for the Chinese Maritime Customs until 1940, when he joined the Royal Air Force.

Flight Lieutenant C.S. Archer was an experienced RAF pilot who spent some considerable time in China in the 1930s. His first-hand knowledge of the places and people of the time is masterfully deployed in Hankow Return to create a compelling world and story.
