Dedicated to the singer Karl Strakatky (1803-1863) who sang at the Stavovské divadlo in Prague from 1825, the 'Hussitenlied' was Liszt's tribute to the Czech people composed especially for his first concert tour of Prague in 1840. Er hatte dessen Abstammung von einem Choral des 15. Jahrhunderts zum Gedenken des großen tschechischen Reformators des Protestantismus, Jan Hus angenommen.Tatsächlich war das Lied weniger als zwanzig Jahre zuvor als Trinklied entstanden und wurde im allgemeinen Bewusstsein, durch wachsende Beliebtheit popularisiert, bald als patriotische Hymne des böhmischen Nationalstolzes verankert.
