Minimal-invasive techniques have been evolving in many areas of medicine during the last 30 years.Especially in regions where wound healing problems are common, and the development of scar tissue isrelated to particular risks and complications, there was a strong tendency within the medical communityto develop surgical techniques which are less traumatic for the patient. Therefore, in foot and ankle surgery, the Achilles tendon rupture was one of the first areas in the scopeof minimally invasive surgeons. However, for a long time, osteotomies have been considered less reliablewith a less predictable outcome than open procedures. Because of those challenges, only a small groupof enthusiasts performed minimal invasive foot and ankle surgery.Meanwhile, many things have changed. One of the most significant developments was the introductionof minimally invasive distal metatarsal osteotomies with a fixation providing similar stability as an openScarf or Chevron. The limited functional results after open lesser toe correction drove the development ofminimally invasive procedures for hammer toe correction. Besides the forefoot procedures, the minimallyinvasive calcaneal sliding osteotomy became popular within the fast-growing group of foot and anklesurgeons.Regarding the number of papers published on minimal invasive foot and ankle surgery, these techniqueshave since reached the center of the foot and ankle community. This book is another milestone in establishing minimally invasive techniques. It provides an up-to-datereview of minimally invasive procedures with a detailed description of surgical steps and postoperativecare. It helps to teach young surgeons the basic principles of minimally invasive surgeries, but it alsocovers many ideas on approaching complex foot and ankle problems for the advanced foot and anklespecialist. Therefore, I am sure this book will inspire young and well-trained foot and ankle surgeons. This book will be considerable support for anybody who wants to learn minimally invasive techniques orwants to improve his skills.Munich, December 2022Prof. Dr. med.
