Urogenital fistulas are one of the most serious health problems for women, leading not only to a prolonged disability and social exclusion, but also causing severe mental suffering and abnormalities in menstrual and reproductive function. Urogenital fistulas have been widely covered in the literature, with a particular focus on vesico-vaginal fistulas. Yet, from a prognostic point-of-view the urethro-vaginal fistula is a more serious illness, as the pathological process may involve not only the urethra but also the urethral sphincter that is responsible for the voluntary control of urination.
