Defilement is a very serious social problem, which unfortunately is on the increase in Uganda. The government of Uganda viewed defilement as a criminal problem and laboured to fight the vice by introducing very harsh punishments including a death sentence but this has not stemmed problem. This study aimed at creating deeper understanding of defilement in order to propose a more comprehensive approach to the prevention of the problem. The fact that defilement continues to occur in society means that there are things we are doing (or failing to do)which enable the problem to thrive. Therefore the researcher sought to look at defilement as a social problem and investigate the social dynamics of the problem in order to formulate broader preventive measures. Protection of children is a collective responsibility of society. The findings of this study will inform the parents, the community and the government of what we can do together to prevent defilement.
