When it comes to organizational transformation, the Department of Defense (DoD) faces many of the same challenges that confront today's large corporations. Consequently, the DoD can benefit from establishing a strong relationship with Corporate America in order to improve its business operations. This paper summarizes the ideas from a Secretary of Defense Corporate Fellow who spent the past year immersed with industry looking at advanced technology and best practices/lessons learned that could be implemented to transform the DoD over the next decades. The paper begins with an introduction of the Secretary of Defense Corporate Fellows program and briefly describes the author's assignment with International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). Next, the author provides an overview of IBM, personal observations made during the assignment, and subsequent recommendations for the DoD to consider as it shapes itself to meet the challenges of an ever-changing security environment.
