A language-teaching program that introduces a change in methodology, procedure and activities has been introduced to the teaching of English in Ethiopian secondary schools. In line with this, a series of textbooks were written and have been in use in secondary schools since 1996. The ultimate aim of the textbooks, according to the authors, appears to be the development of students' English proficiency - linguistic and communicative skills so that they will be able to use English effectively in a variety of pedagogical and social contexts. To achieve this, teachers are urged in the teacher's guide to make students the center of attention by encouraging them to be active participants and by providing them with opportunities to practice the language meaningfully and interactively through pair and group work activities. The objectives of this book is, therefore, to explore the extent to which teachers display or fail to display a range of grammar teaching behaviors and instructional procedures recommended in the new course.
