Dniprova Chaika (Ludmila Oleksiivna Vasylevska-Berezina) was born on November 1, 1861 in the village of Zeleny Yar of the Domaniv district in the Mykolayiv region in the family of a priest. She spent her childhood and youth in the south of Ukraine. After graduating from the Odesa Gymnasium in 1879, she began her teaching career first as a private teacher, then worked in rural schools of the Kherson province. Dniprova Chaika started writing in high school. Some poems ("On the death of Turgenev") were printed in "Odessko Vestnik" (1883). In 1885, the Odessa almanac "Niva" published for the first time two poems by Dnipro Chaika ("Vistochka" and "Song") and the short story "The Witch Doctor", which in its nature is close to being recorded from the mouths of the people. The writer's significant contribution to the development of children's literature is the poems "Winter", "Spring", "Children's Voice"; stories "Beetroot", "Drops - Travelers"; fairy tales "The Tale of the Sun and His Son", "The Greek Tale". She published articles and reviews in the pedagogical press, actively collaborated in the magazine "Dzvinok", was interested in folklore. In 1884, at the VI Archaeological and Ethnographic Congress held in Odesa, she presented three notebooks of "Ukrainian folk songs sung in the Dnipro district of the Tavryche province." Many songs from the writer's voice were recorded by M. Lysenko, who created several romances based on her words.
