Since its first appearance in 1950, Pounder's Marine Diesel Engines has served seagoing engineers, students of the Certificates of Competency examinations and the marine engineering industry throughout the world. Each new edition has noted the changes in engine design and the influence of new technology and economic needs on the marine diesel engine.

This eighth edition retains the directness of approach and attention to essential detail that characterized its predecessors. There are new chapters on monitoring control systems and governor systems, gas turbines and safety aspects of engine operation. Important developments such as the latest diesel-electric LNG carriers that will soon be in operation.

After experience as a seagoing engineer with the British India Steam Navigation Company, Doug Woodyard held editorial positions with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Marine Engineers. He subsequently edited The Motor Ship journal for eight years before becoming a freelance editor specializing in shipping, shipbuilding and marine engineering. He is currently technical editor of Seatrade, a contributing editor to Speed at Sea, Shipping World and Shipbuilder and a technical press consultant to Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine.

- Designed to reflect the recent changes to SQA/Marine and Coastguard Agency Certificate of Competency exams. Careful organisation of the new edition enables readers to access the information they require
- Brand new chapters focus on monitoring control systems and governor systems, gas turbines and safety aspects of engine operation
- High quality, clearly labelled illustrations and figures

Review quote:
8th Edition

"...this comprehensive text provides all of the up-to-date and latest details to which those involved with ship propulsion plants may wish to refer." The Naval Architect - March 2004

"Pounder's has been one of the classic references for the marine industry. I would definitely recommend having this eighth edtion of Pounder's on an engineering bookshelf, especially if there isn't a seventh edition on that shelf. SNAME News - July 2004

"The eighth edition of this guide contains new chapters on gas turbines, monitoring and control systems, and safety and environmental aspects of engine operation. Profusely illustrated with line drawings and photographs, this guide should continue to be essential reading to students of marine engineering" - The Motor Ship, July/August 2004

Reviews of Previous Editions

"Authoritative commentary on a great many engines and subjects associated with marine diesel installations... nicely balanced between sufficient explanation and specialist technical complexity. This is a very good book that will be very much appreciated by those studying for certificates in competency." Marine Engineers Review

"The book is well illustrated throughout with line drawings and photographs, and reference is aided by a comprehensive index. The authority of Pounder remains intact... like its predecessors, can be recommended as an essential guide to modern marine engine design and operation." Motor Ship

"Completely rewritten and restructured, while retaining the directness of approach and attention to detail characterising its predecessors" Nautical Magazine

"Will serve admirably as a reference for anyone involved in marine projects."
The Naval Architect

"Invaluable reference source" Marine Propulsion

"The eighth edition of this text enables readers to access the information they require by providing high-quality, clearly labeled illustrations and figures. This new edition keeps with the engineering tradition of its predecessors while offering brand new chapters that focus on monitoring control systems and governor systems, gas turbines and safety aspects of engine operation and is designed to reflect maritime engineering certificate of competency exams. Each new edition has noted the changes in engine design and the infleuence of new technology and economic needs on the marine diesel engine." - Sea Technology July 2004
