In contrast with the Pacific Northwest, aircraft wreck hunting in the deserts and mountains of Arizona, California, and Nevada is entirely different. With the absence of many trees, visibility and GPS reception is usually excellent. With a good set of binoculars one can spot gleaming pieces of wreckage in bright sunshine from many miles away. In addition to the historical coverage of the crashes and investigations, there is also much detail on the planning conducted before undertaking a wreckage search and also the care taken to leave the sites undisturbed. Author Dave McCurry grew up an avid outdoorsman involved in hunting, fishing, and mountain climbing, but spent most of his life flying fixed-wing aircraft. As a young kid during the late 1950s and early 1960s, Dave scanned the skies taking note of every type of old radial-engine aircraft that flew over knowing that someday he would be a part of the flying world. Starting out young, he had already co-owned two airplanes by the time that he reached twenty-one years of age. During his nearly fifty years involvement in flying, Dave has served as a flight instructor, contract pilot, and charter pilot, and had the opportunity of flying more than 200 different types of single and multi-engine aircraft. Having an intense interest in aviation history, he cherished the opportunity to study historical aircraft wrecks that are located all over the Western United States and with twenty-five years of experience in wreck hunting and aviation archaeology, Dave has become a notable writer.
