After Mark's marriage comes apart he meets and falls madly in love with Lauren Morgan, also a stock broker and able to converse in mental telepathy. They progress to him moving into her apartment, with both having a drinking problem. Mark is fi red from his company from too much drinking. He and Lauren have terrible arguments and she calls the police for help. Mark is sent to Rikers Island prison for 20 days. Mark leaves prison, stops drinking and begins attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and still pursues Lauren despite another man entering her life.
