This book starts by giving a brief history of depression and some of the approaches used in its treatment; discusses the advancement of mans' understanding both of the social construction and also concerning the different therapies used to treat the illness. From there, it moves to an outline of the diagnosis of depression and discusses the history of CBT's "Three Waves", focusing on "Wave Two" but also addressing modern developments in the therapy. Chapter Two is concerned with four other approaches of treatment for depression: Exercise, Choice Theory & Reality Therapy, Mindfulness and Antidepressants. Chapter Three is concerned with a synthesis of treatments, which are favoured by some psychiatric services. It talks about using CBT as a stand-alone treatment and combining it with other approaches for more severe presentations of the condition. The book concludes by taking an optimistic view of man's developing psychological, scientific and social advancement in relation to depression and its treatment.
