1983: Leighton, an American agent, must infiltrate an indigenous guerilla movement in war-torn Madrinega during the CIA's war against the Sandinistas in nearby Nicaragua. His assignment: Locate and arrange extraction of four cruise missiles seized from Madrinega's military government by the rebels, before they can turn them on the dictator General Vilar. Posing as a left-wing journalist, Leighton antagonizes Vilar's regime with news coverage criticizing the counterinsurgency campaign to gain the guerillas' trust and induce them to make contact before the Secret Police can silence him. Rescued by the guerillas almost too late, Leighton encounters their leader, a beautiful socialist revolutionary known only as Zorrita, who sees in the upstart reporter a potential ally but she too will kill him if she discovers she's harboring an American spy.
