The study of conducting polymers has intensified during the last three decades. Entire field of conducting polymers was given a scientific blessing when Alan G. MacDiarmid shared the 2000 Nobel Prize with Alan J. Heeger of the University of California at Santa Barbara and Hideki Shirakawa, University of Tsukuba, Japan for the discovery and development of some conductive polymers, i.e. polyacetylene. They showed that oxidation with Cl2, Br2 vapours made polyacetylene films 109 times more conductive than they were originally.
