Max decides to ride his bicycle in search of his father, and his journey leads over flooded creeks and unfamiliar territory. Joe follows him out of town and joins him on his journey. The two boys learn to understand each other and become fast friends as they survive the perils of wilderness Texas.

Dede Fox Ducharme is a native Texan and the granddaughter of Jewish immigrants to Galveston. This novel is not the author's family's story, but she says writing it gave her an opportunity to express her love for her grandparents and her pride in being a Jewish Texan. She is an intermediate school librarian in the Houston area.
