Machine vision as a technology has had a significant impact in the manufacturing domain over the last few decades, and is a key component of the Internet of Things (IoT) industry. It's applications include a wide variety of manufacturing use cases, from surface mount technology (SMT) and Paint and Laser (PnL) to Final Assembly (FA). It looks to replicate the human eye in inspection tasks. One of the main challenges for engineers is to decide to purchase off the shelf (OTS) solutions or build custom solutions. The figures of merit are there - cost, accuracy, features, for example. This book demonstrates a hybrid design where OTS components are combined with custom algorithm design in C++ to deliver a series of connected software products to inspect paint finish, LEDs, graphics and more on a final assembly production line. The result was a low cost hybrid-custom solution that was deployed to over twenty production cells in the manufacturing facility. It also got mounted onto automated pick and place machines to further enhance design value.
