The Dreams of Our Ancestors tells the inspiring story of Emeka Akukwondo and her journey from a small village in Nigeria to Los Angeles. Through stories of triumph and loss, love and heartbreak, and joy and sorrow, readers will walk away from each chapter with the same sacred lessons of ancestral wisdom that made Emeka's journey possible. This novel is inspired by my mother's life and is my way of honoring her and all the people who made her the amazing person I know her to be. Emeka Akukwondo is a young girl living in Onicha Olona, Nigeria in the early 1960's. On her first day of school, she is embarrassed to learn that her first name is actually a common boy's name in the Igbo language. This incident prompts Emeka to ask her father why he gave her a boy's name. He tells her, "Your name is a precious thing, dear. Your name comes from one of your ancestors, and you are his dream come true."
