In a lot of communities in developing countries and in Accra Ghana, for that matter, solid waste management is characterized by single method approaches such as collect-and-dump. Lesser social acceptability of dump sites and inadequate operational funding often lead to collapse of these management systems. Solid waste quantities and composition in such communities present an opportunity to plan and operate management strategies that address social, economic and environmental impacts of the waste. Integrating strategies as collection and sorting for recycling, stakeholder (private investors, policy makers/management and the public) involvement and bioreactor treatment will yield optimum benefits to operational funds, clean environment and to society; a win-win-win scenario that must be appealing to policy makers and investors.
