Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 4 (B), Obafemi Awolowo University (Faculty of Administration), course: Local Government and Development Studies, language: English, abstract: This study examines the effects of empowerment programmes on grassroots development and governmental intervention in Osun State, Nigeria. The study examined the effects of empowerment programmes among the people of Osun from 2010-2020. It also identifies the challenges in the implementation of various policies and programmes for grassroots development in Osun State. The study utilized primary and secondary sources of data. Primary data were sourced through the administration of questionnaire and personal interviews. Secondary data were collected from relevant journals, books, government publications. Frequency tables were used to analyze the data collected. The sample size of this study was one hundred and fifty. The findings showed that the rate of improvement is agreed, when the basic problems of people are solved as a result of the creation of local government and the closeness of grassroots authorities to the people promotes democracy. However, the study discovered that lack of qualified politicians, excessive politicking at the local level, corruption, lack of community participation in the development process, misplaced priorities, poor revenue base of local government, and dearth of high skilled manpower, and lack of autonomy are the challenges confronting grassroots development and governmental intervention in Osun State, Nigeria. The study concludes that the task of grassroots development most especially in Nigeria's fourth republic cannot be achieved by one section of the society. The effort of the government alone cannot solve all the problems, nor can the people solely achieve any level of success. The success, therefore, depends on the combined efforts of the two agents that are; the government and the people who are domiciled at the grassroots.
