An Examination of Moral Cognizance and Moral Decision Making in a Diverse Student Population

This research study measures the level of moral
development of students from different ethnic
backgrounds using Lawrence Kohlberg''s Cognitive
Moral Development theory (CMD). This study also uses
James Rest''s Defining Issues Test (DIT) survey
instrument to determine if there are differences in
the ethical behavior of people from different ethnic
backgrounds and to measure the level of cognitive
moral development of each group. This study also
explores the effect of gender, grade point average
(GPA), field of study, level of study, and ethics
education on students'' cognitive moral reasoning.
This study hopes to open the field and encourage
further research in linking ethical inquiries and
ethnicity.

Autor

Dr. Evelyn Ducheine Cartright is Assistant Professor and
Director of Africana Studies at Barry University. She teaches
English, Caribbean and African American Literature and
Humanities. She received her Doctorate from Nova Southeastern
University, her Master in English, Bachelors in English, and
Philosophy from Stony Brook University.
