Dr. Da Luz graduated in Medicine from the Federal University of Paraná (1965), PhD in Cardiology at the University of São Paulo (1972) and Post-Graduation at the University of Southern California and Cedar-Sinai Medical Center (UCLA), USA for 5 years. He is currently Member of the Academy of Sciences, Commander of the National Order of Scientific Merit and Senior Professor of Cardiology at the Heart Institute, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo.

He was named by his colleagnes one of the most influential cardiologists in Brazil, in the 20th century. He his the recipent of inumerous awards from universities, medical institutins and professional organizations. He received the Jabuti Award in 2004, for the book Endothelium and Cardiovascular Diseases co-edited with Francisco Laurindo and Antonio C.P. Chagas. He is also the author of three additional books regarding medical education and the practice of medicine. In 2015 he received the Fundação Conrado Wessel Award, in Medicine, a most prestigious medical award. The author of over 400 national and internationl publications, including 258 peer-reviewed, and book chapters. Past-President of Sociedade de Cardiologia do Estado de São Paulo (SOCESP), Sociedade Brasileira de Insvestigação Clínica (SBIC), founder and present - President of Associação Brasileira de Cardiologia Translacional (ABCT).

He is practing cardiologists and academic researcher as well. His main research areas are atherosclerosis, endothelium and coronary artery disease.
