The book begins by providing an overview of the 802.11 standard for WLAN architecture and gradually builds on that by introducing indoor wireless coverage based on indoor path loss models, selected indoor environments and the resulting SINR and rate profiles. The advanced features of TPC (Transmit Power Control) for WLAN standard were presented and demonstrated for a slowly varying indoor channel. Subsequently, TPC algorithms in the form of cooperative rate management suitable for WLAN devices have been proposed. These algorithms have been applied in various indoor propagation environments and the results were analyzed to validate these algorithms. The algorithms have also been applied to actual apartment layout to ensure a certain achievable data rate for the users. Cooperative rate management strategy has been augmented with smart antenna techniques that provide further improvement in data rate. The authors expect that this book will be helpful to communication engineering students and researchers to understand rate management scheme applicable to WLAN devices and propose new algorithms to improve the performance further.
